Cornerbacks
Now onto the CB's. As always, this is one of the largest groups in any position. However, only 1 or 2 will be drafted in the top 20. It's mainly comprised of lots of talent in the mid-rounds who could end up sleepers. CB i believe is one of the hardest positions to evaluate: there's lots of guys who play at lower level schools that become great players and coincidentally, there are lots of bigtime CB's in college that bust. Good luck to teams who need a CB. Listed below are heights and weights, 40 yard dash times, reps of 225, vertical leaps, broadjumps, 20-yd shuttle times, and 3-cone drill times with some scouting reports on each.
1. Malcolm Jenkins - Ohio st (CB/FS)
6'0 204, 40-yd dash: 4.51, reps of 225: 15, 4.08 shuttle, 6.59 cones
projected: top 20
overall: Jenkins is an All-American corner who is very physical at the line,a solid tackler with great game speed and excellent hands. He sometimes doesn't finish plays when blitzing from the edge and takes a lot of chances. Jenkins ran (only) a 4.51 so scouts are concerned he may have to switch to Free Safety as he is not fast enough. I say: who cares how he ran his 40, Jenkins has been the best corner in college football the past 2 seasons. He may not be a true "shut down" corner, but mark my words, he should be very solid.
2. Darius Butler - Uconn
5'10 183, 40-yd dash: 4.38, vertical leap: 43 in, broadjump: 11-2, 4.18 shuttle, 6.92 cones
projected: 1st round
overall: Butler is a very athletic, instinctive corner who plays good in zone. He has very good straight-line and closing speed and good hands. Negatives on him are he's not particularly strong and not the greatest tackler. Butler is sometimes is beaten by quicker recievers by their initial move. In my opinion, Butler may be the best corner in this draft. He's a flat out playmaker and all of his negatives can be corrected. Like they say, you just cannot teach speed and athleticism.
3. Vontae Davis - Illinois
5'11 203, 40-yd dash: 4.4, reps of 225: 25, vertical leap: 37.5 in, broadjump:10-5, 4.07 shuttle, 6.75 cones
projected: late 1st round
overall: Davis is a great combo of size and speed. He also has great closing speed, is good in run support, and probably has the greatest upside among CB's. However, Davis apparently has maturity issues (a lot like his older brother, Vernon, who has been a bust in the league with the 49ers). Davis is also being accused of not being a natural playmaker who has bad hands. Davis also lacks "game speed" and sometimes gets beaten by double moves.
opinion: If not for the maturity issues, Davis' athleticism may have gotten him into the top 10. Some scouts have called him "uncoachable", which has prompted questions of him even getting drafted in round 1. If Davis can do what he's asked and not be a pain to his coaches, he likely will be very good. If not, well he'll be out of this league in no time.
4. Sean Smith - Utah (CB/FS)
6'4 214, 40-yd dash: 4.47, reps of 225: 10, vertical leap: 32 in, broadjump: 9-11, 6.92 cones
projected: late 1st-early 2nd round
overall: Smith is a CB or FS prospect who happens to be very quick for his size. He has great ball skills and is a playmaker. Smith is also an effective blitzer and very quick against run, making him a possible FS prospect if he gets stronger. What hurts him is that he is a "tweener" who can't really be projected at a specific position yet. Smith also isnt as physical as some would like, sometimes gets stuck on blocks, and sometimes takes bad angles on plays. Overall, with some work, Smith should be very valuable for a team who uses him the right way.
5. Alphonso Smith - Wake forest
5'9 193, 40-yd dash: 4.47, vertical leap: 34 in, reps of 225: 13, broadjump: 10-5, 4.38 shuttle, 7.09 cones
projected: early 2nd round
overall: Smith is a nice little playmaker who has great ball skills(22 career ints at Wake). He also has good speed and is good at reading the qb. He brings a toughness and is not shy of contact. Smith is also short and struggles against bigger recievers who could push him around a little bit. He probably won't be a legit #1 corner but could be a great undersized X-factor for a defense because he knows the game.
6. DJ Moore - Vanderbilt
5'10 192, 40-yd dash: 4.57, vertical leap: 39.5 in
projected: 2nd round
pros: good in run support and screens, good fit for zone defense, very smart, former wr
cons: struggles against very fast or big recievers, bites on double moves, needs to secure ball better on punt returns
opinion: Moore brings some good things to the table with his football IQ. Unfortunately, he's a #2 CB who needs to be around a good defense to make a lot of noise due to his lack of speed and inability to cover premium wideouts
7. Victor Harris - Virginia Tech
5'11 198, 40-yd dash: 4.46, reps of 225: 13, vertical leap: 34 in, 4.0 shuttle, broadjump: 10-1
projected: 2nd round
pros: perfect for cover 2, a playmaker, solid tackler in run support, good in zone defense, returner who can make plays
cons: quick but not fast, he sometimes cant keep up with quicker recievers, sometimes gets overly aggressive - leading to penalties
opinion: With a good system, Harris could be a real threat in the return game and coverage and could be of nice value in round 2
8. Jairus Byrd - Oregon (CB/S)
5'10 207, 40-yd dash: 4.68, vertical leap: 35 in, reps of 225: 22, 4.1 shuttle, 6.75 cones
projected: 2nd-3rd round
pros: more of a safety prospect, gets good jam on wr's, very athletic for size, good closing speed, good return ability, good in run support
cons: more quick than fast really, sometimes a little overly physical in coverage, played around a good defense in college and could just be a product of the system
opinion: Byrd really looks like a good valued satefy prospect. He's got the size, athleticism, and quickness. Of course he'll need some time to develop so he's a pretty raw prospect.
9. Keenan Lewis - Oregon st
6'1 195, 40-yd dash: 4.49, reps of 225: 19, vertical leap: 38.5 in, broadjump:10-10, 4.4 shuttle, 6.89 cones
projected: 3rd round
pros: great height, is a bump-n-run corner, stays with recievers down the field after the bump, good football IQ
cons: questionable against deep threat recievers, drops some ints, sometimes not as physical as most would like
opinion: If Lewis can tweak his game some, he could be a real steal in round 3. He has all the intangibles to be a solid player if not better. Prob best fit in a zone scheme.
10. Mike Mickens - Cinncinati
6'0 184, 40-yd dash: 4.53, reps of 225: 19, vertical leap: 35.5 in, broadjump: 9-11, 6.94 cones
projected: 3rd round
Pros: He's a legit cover corner who gets excellent break on ball/closing speed. He deflects lots of throws and also has good hands and is a playmaker. Very confident and coachable, great attitude
Cons: not great at blitzing and needs to work on tackling. He was injured last year (or probably would have been higher)
Opinion: Mickens is a great option at the 3rd round or so in the draft. His weaknesses can all be corrected with coaching. His 4.53 40 raises some concerns as he is more fit for a zone coverage system, but his smarts make up for that.
11. Asher Allen - Georgia
5'10 194, 40-yd dash: 4.48, reps of 225: 22, vertical leap: 35 in, 4.3 shuttle, 6.93 cones
projected: 3rd round
Pros:He's got a good build for small height and shows good acceleration and cover skills. Mentally tough and good in run support. He's got some good potential and can also return kicks.
Cons: He tends to bite on double moves and has bad hands. He hasnt been able to put it all together at this point.
Opinion: I like what Allen brings to the table. He's a solid cover guy and a tough player. Something tells me he'll put it together learning in someone's system for a year or 2 and end up being a solid pick.
12. Kevin Barnes - Maryland
6'0 187, 40-yd dash: 4.45, vertical leap: 41 in, 3.96 shuttle, broadjump: 10-8, 6.72 cones
projected: 3rd-4th round
Pros: Has good height and hands as well as long arms to shield recievers. Also a solid hitter
Cons: He misses his fair share of tackles by not wrapping up and hasn't shown much on field speed despite what he was timed in the 40
Opinion: Barnes looks like a great athlete on paper. Perfect size for CB with good speed to match. He'll need to show that he can "get it" in the NFL and could be a great pick, or a terrible one.
13. Captain Munnerlyn - South Carolina
5'9 182, 40-yd dash: 4.41, vertical leap: 36.5 in, 4.04 shuttle, 7.05 cones
projected: 3rd-4th round
Pros: He has great speed and can run with anyone. Has soft hands for picks and is an experienced return man, he is solid in run support.
Cons: A lack of height could hurt him. He can also be beaten on double moves and has a history of inconsistant play. A injury history over 3 years.
Opinion: Munnerlyn is a solid return man and projects as a nickel CB at best in the NFL, which isn't too bad, but a team should not reach in round 3 for him.
14. Morgan Trent - Michigan
6'1 193, 40-yd dash: 4.53, reps of 225: 23, vertical leap: 38 in, broadjump: 10-7
projected: 4th-5th round
Pros: he has good height and is a solid tackler. He sheds recievers blocks regularly and manages to stay with most recievers.
Cons: Tends to struggle against quicker recievers and doesnt jam well enough at the line. Also is not an effective blitzer
Opinion: Trent is a classic boom or bust draft pick. He's got all the intangibles (solid speed with size), but must work on some some of those weaknesses.
15. Joe Burnett - Central Florida
5'10 192, 40-yd dash: 4.51, reps of 225: 22
projected: 5th round
Pros: A definite leader..very strong and adds good closing speed. Has good hand-eye coordination to tip passes or pick them off.
Cons: Is smaller in size and lacks elite speed (better in zone system), not the greatest tackler when it comes to technique.
Opinion: Burnett will most likely be a project but i like what skills he brings to the table. It really depends where he goes, if he gets a team that's best suited for him. Solid pick as a mid rounder.
16. Coye Francies - San Jose st
6'1 185, 40-yd dash: 4.59, reps of 225: 24
projected: 4th-5th round
Pros: Has good frame along with good awareness in coverage. Long arms and is solid in run support and tackling,
Cons: needs to put on some weight and sometimes gets overly physical. Very raw(only career 15 starts), had gun charges on him that were later dropped.
17. Jerraud Powers - Auburn
5'9 188, 40-yd dash: 4.43, vertical leap: 35 in, broadjump: 10-3, 4.31 shuttle, 6.91 cones
projected: 5th round
Pros: can run with recievers and has good speed, is also a good tackler
Cons: A lack of height and can get too aggressive at times
Opinion: Powers obviously isn't as big as scouts would like, but he's a solid cover guy who i think is of good value where he's going to be drafted.
18. Domonique Johnson - Jackson st
6'2 192, 40-yd dash: 4.52, 4.28 shuttle, 7.21 cones
projected: 5th round
Pros: Has good height with long arms and good speed. He can run with recievers and displays a high football iq, can also play some FS if needed.
19. Brandon Hughes - Oregon st
5'11 182, 40-yd dash: 4.5, vertical leap: 37 in
projected: 5th round
Pros: bump and run style corner with lots of experience at the college level. Also a good character guy
Cons: struggles against speed recievers
Opinion: Should be a very solid pick in the mid to late rounds. If nothing else, should provide solid depth.
20. Lardarius Webb - Nicholls st
5'10 179, 40-yd dash: 4.46
projected: 5th-6th round
Pros: was a star return man who's versatile, fast, and tough
Cons: As always with a small school prospect - lack of competition..also was dismissed from Southern Miss for some reason...
Opinion: Webb is a definite sleeper. He brings a lot of strengths to the table
21. Brice McCain, Utah
5'9 185, 40-yd dash: 4.3, reps of 225: 12, vertical leap: 36.5 in
prtojected: 5th-6th round
Pros: shows great speed and kick return ability
Cons: lack of size and strength needed in run support...nickel corner at very best
22. Glover Quin, New Mexico, 5'11 204, 4.54 40, 22 reps, 38 vert
projected: 5-6th
23. Bruce Johnson - Miami
5'10 170, reps of 225: 10, 40-yd dash: 4.42, vertical leap: 38.5 in, broadjump: 10-4, 4.03 shuttle
projected: 5th-6th round
Pros: pure cover corner with great speed and very quick hips in coverage. Could be a good nickel corner and is solid on special teams
Cons: strength is the biggest concern. He needs to play better in zone coverage and run stopping ability is below avg
24. DeAngelo Smith - Cinncinati
5'11 194, 40-yd dash: 4.63, vertical leap: 32 in, broadjump: 9-7, 4.4 shuttle, 6.86 cones
projected: 5th-6th round
Pros: aggressive corner with long arms and good hands. Is a hard worker
Cons: ineffective at jamming recievers and doesn't use his size well. Also struggles vs quick slot guys
Opinion: A depth player at best, needs a lot of work
25. Jason McCourty - Rutgers
5'11 185, 40-yd dash: 4.3, reps of 225: 15, vertical leap: 36.5 in
projected: 5th-6th round
Pros: McCourty has blazing speed and can run with anyone. Also jumps routes well, is a solid hitter, and is very good in coverage.
Cons: His small size leads to not being able to get off blocks. Sometimes falls for quick moves at line and struggles with big recievers.
Opinion: McCourty definitely has the speed to be productive in the NFL. He should be a bit of a project to work on some of his glaring weaknesses.
26. Mark Parson - Ohio
5'9 188, 40-yd dash: 4.57, reps of 225: 22, vertical leap: 37.5 in
projected: 5th-6th round
Pros: plays big for his size and is a good tackler with solid closing speed. Best fit for a zone defense, played special teams in college.
Cons: His overall strength is a question mark. Also struggles against big recievers and sometimes takes poor angles, falls for double moves too easily
Opinion: Parson is your classic small-school player who may be a bit overshadowed by others nationally. He won't be a success right away, but has the intangibles to be a solid reserve.
27. Ellis Lankster - West Virginia
5'9 191
projected: 6th round
Pros: A zone corner prospect who's solid in run support. Shows good aggressiveness and jam at the line
Cons: lack of size and must stick on special teams to get his shot
Overall: Lankster is a project who could flourish in the right system
28. Jahi Word-Daniels - Georgia Tech
6'0 197, 40-yd dash: 4.59, reps of 225: 24, vertical leap: 38 in, 6.83 cones
projected: 6th round
Pros: can run with quicker recievers. Has good height for the position and is good in run support
Cons: tackling is inconsistant and needs work. Not good at shedding blocks and has bad hands
Opinion: Word-Daniels has good size, but not the fastest guy out there and has some flaws. Project player
29. Donald Washington - Ohio st
6'0 197, 40-yd dash: 4.52, vertical leap: 45 in
projected: 6th-7th round
Pros: good height, is an athlete and shows good speed. Shows good acceleration, is a smart player. Could be a kick return man
Cons: more of a raw athlete than a football player. Not good in run support and character issue (was suspended last year)
Opinion: Washington hasn't really put it all together yet. Still, with his raw athleticism, some team will draft him as a project.
30. Bradley Fletcher - Iowa
6'1 196, 40-yd dash: 4.44, vertical leap: 40 in, broadjump: 10-7, 4.22 shuttle
projected: 6th-7th round
Pros: good sized guy who shows good jamming ability at the line. Big hands to knock away passes. Has good hands and plays well against big recievers
Cons: got burned deep at times. Very raw player who's not the most physical hitter out there
Opinion: A lot of teams are taking a look at Fletcher. Mainly because of his safety-like size and good speed. He's raw, but a definite sleeper in the late rounds (may even be drafted before then)
31. DeAngelo Willingham - Tennessee (CB/FS)
5'11 217, 40-yd dash: 4.46
projected: 6th-7th round
32. Lydell Sargeant - Penn st
5'9 190, 40-yd dash: 4.48, 4.2 shuttle, 6.93 cones
projected: 6th-7th round
Pros: intelligent and a solid tackler
Cons: lack of straight-line speed for his slender frame may hurt him
33. Robert Haynes - Michigan Tech

projected: 6th-7th round
