Quarterbacks

First off, I want to say this is a rather weak QB class. There's no clear cut "can't miss" QB out there and there's not much depth as far as underrated star QB's that could be drafted in later rounds. I have heights and weights here, along with 40 times (which basically mean nothing for QB's)  and hand sizes. Why hand sizes you ask? smaller hands by your teams QB usually leads to more fumbles.

1. Matt Stafford - Georgia

6'2 225, 40 yd time: 4.84, hand size: 10, 4.47 shuttle, 7.06 cones

projected: top 5 pick

Pros: is a tough hard-nosed QB with a rocket arm that can make all the throws. Shows great competitiveness and is a natural leader. Smooth release makes his throwing almost effortless. Cool under pressure and has quick feet for his size to elude defenders.

Cons: Grew a reputation of losing big games in his college career. Sometimes gets overconfident in his arm and forces some throws into coverage.

Opinion: Mark my words Lions fans: Stafford won't be a bust unless you continue to draft terribly and put no talent around him. He can make all the throws and comes from a pro-style offense. Talent and good coaching will enable him to be a star.

2. Mark Sanchez - USC

6'2 227, 40-yd dash: 4.88, hand size: 9.6, 4.35 shuttle, 7.28 cones

projected: top 10 pick

Pros: is a blue-collar type of QB who shows very good quickness on the run. Played in a pro style offense and displayed good ability to read defenses. Good touch and accuracy on his throws.

Cons: not a scrambler even though he is quick. Limited experience and great talent around him could have made him look better than he was

Opinion: Sanchez is very inexperienced but really could end up at being the best out of the top 3 QB's. He has a great overall game but I feel he must be selected by a good team to get the most out of him. I'm still not convinced he's a pure franchise QB who can take a team of scrubs around him and make them better (i.e Matt Ryan). Should be solid starter.

3. Josh Freeman - Kansas st

6'6 248, 40-yd dash: 4.76, hand size: 10, 4.34 shuttle, 7.11 cones

projected: 1st round

Pros: pocket passer with a rocket arm who's also a good leader. Shows good strength and athleticism to get away from tacklers.

Cons: could have used another year in school. Accuracy is inconsistant. Sometimes holds onto ball too long.

Opinion: Freeman is the definition of a boom or bust prospect. I personally think he's more on the lines of a boom...in time. He's still very raw and a bit risky to take in round 1 but somebody will do it.

4. Rhett Bomar - Sam Houston st

6'2 225, 40-yd dash: 4.82, reps of 225: 21, hand size: 9, 4.36 shuttle, 7.22 cones,

projected: 4th round

Pros: definitely has the abilities to be successful. Strong arm with good foot quickness. Good vocal leadership skills

Cons: Sometimes locks onto primary target, resulting in sacks. Sometimes tries to do too much rather than throwing the ball away. Neds to work on his touch

Opinion: Bomar is my sleeper at the QB position for 2009 and for good reason. He's got a cannon arm and shows good quickness to get outside the pocket. He will have to work on reading defenses but it wouldn't surprise me to see him starting one day.

5. Stephan McGee - Texas A&M

6'3 223, 40 time: 4.66, hand size: 9

projected: 4th round

Pros: tough QB who shows good velocity on his passes - especially short and intermediate. Good athlete who can buy time outside of pocket or take off running.

Cons: very raw passer and it shows in his delivery. Doesn't show patience in the pocket. Suffered injury during senior year

Opinion: McGee brings a lot to the table - toughness, athleticism, a leader, etc. - and some team will take a chance on him. But he is a project who came from an option system and must work on being a passer.

6. Nate Davis - Ball st

6'2 226, 40-yd dash: 4.87, hand size: 9.5, 4.33 shuttle, 7.14 cones

projected: 5th round

Pros: a rocket arm - almost as good as Stafford and Freeman. shows very good pocket awareness and get move effortlessly to buy time. Hard worker who has a good release. Shows good poise and touch for most part

Cons: has a learning disability that lowered his stock. Some still think he has immaturity issues. Tends to have a good amount of passes deflected.

Opinion: Davis could be a boom or bust prospect who needs to be put in a good situation to succeed in his career. He could have used another year in school. No question has has the tools but will need to digest the mental aspects of playing QB in the NFL and shouldn't be thrown into the fire for a year or more until he's ready.

7. Brian Hoyer - Michigan st

6'2 215

projected: 5th-6th round

Pros: is a game manager type: reads defenses and checks down. Good accuracy short to intermediate routes and shows a pretty good arm.

Cons: locks onto recievers at times. Very inconsistant in college. Really does have any great abilities (arm strength, accuracy, escapability)

Opinion: Todd McShay's boy Hoyer will garner some attention. I have no idea why he's so high on him. He does everything decently but nothing spectacularly well. Translation: good backup QB and nothing more.

8. Tom Brandstater - Fresno st

6'5 220, 40-yd dash: 4.87, hand size: 9.5, 4.37 shuttle, 6.93 cones

projected: 5th-6th round

Pros: pocket passer with very good football sense - like a coach on the field. No character issues, displays a high quick release.

Cons: lofts the ball too much on deeper passes. Accuracy is sometimes questionable has his TD to int ratio could be better. No scrambling ability.

Opinion: Brandstater must work on his accuracy and touch (and there's no reason to think he won't). Should be at least a decent backup QB for years.

9. John Parker Wilson - Alabama

6'2 219, 40 time: 4.87, hand size: 9.5

projected: 5th-6th round

Pros: is good at reading a defense and shows a quick release. Good character guy.

Cons: doesn't have a strong arm and doesn't escape well when pressured. Can't throw well on the run and usually doesn't throw a good deep ball

Opinion: Wilson is probably a clone of Brooks Bollinger. Bollinger's QB lines usually read something like: 11/15 passing for 75 yds...meaning he doesn't complete passes outside of 10 yds. Wilson will be no more than a backup with his below average arm strength and immobility.

10. Nathan Brown - Central Arkansas

6'1 219, 40-yd dash: 4.94, hand size: 9

projected: 6th-7th round

Pros: shows good zip and accuracy on his throws and has good pocket awareness. Good football sense makes up for weaknesses and shows good accuracy on short passes. Shows good poise

Cons: below average height and a lack of arm strength hurts him. Throws a lot of his passes low (throwing motion)

Opinion: Brown has a weak arm and is undersized. His pocket awareness really resembles that of Tony Romo. Unfortunately, he more than likely will be nothing more than a backup.

11. Hunter Cantwell - Louisville

6'5 235, 40-yd dash: 5.17, hand size: 10.25

projected: 6th-7th round

Pros: ideal size for an NFL QB with an arm to match. Good leadership skills

Cons: With that arm strength, throws an inconsistant ball and accuracy is hot and cold. His release is not quick by any means and has led to ints. Sometimes holds onto ball too long

Opinion: Cantwell will be a project. Whoever drafts him must be patient. He has the arm and size to be a QB in the NFL but must work on all other aspects of his game.

12. Mike Teel - Rutgers

6'3 230, 40-yds dash: 5.17, 4.59 shuttle, 7.69 cones

projected: 6th-7th round

Pros: good size and an adequate arm for the NFL level. Experienced taking snaps both under center and in shotgun. Shows good character: played through a broken throwing hand in 2007.

Cons: has no mobility and stares down recievers - leading to a good deal of ints. Must deal with pressure better.

Opinion: I really think Teel will be drafted before the 7th round. He's got an NFL arm and played in a pro style offense. With some work, could be a decent backup.

13. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech

6'2 223, 40-yd dash: 4.89, hand size: 9.5, 4.38 shuttle, 7.21 cones

projected: 7th round

Pros: accurate QB who displays quick release when throwing on the move. Good character guy and has good football IQ

Cons: just an average arm - nothing more. Never had to drop back in Texas Tech's shotgun offense. Occasionally throws balls low

Opinion: Harrell will really have to work on his game. He might not even be drafted and his average arm strength will hurt him himj his whole football career. However, his accuracy and football IQ should keep him on a roster for long time at least.
